Embarking on a dental career in the UAE in 2025 involves a meticulous process of licensing exams, with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Ministry of Health (MOH), Department of Health (DOH/HAAD) and EMREE licensing playing pivotal roles. This step-by-step guide illuminates the application procedures for these exams, ensuring a smooth journey for dentists aiming to practice in the Gulf.
This guide breaks down the essentials, providing a roadmap for success.

The 2024 DHA General Dentist exam comprises 150 MCQs to be completed in 170 minutes. Success opens doors to lucrative opportunities in the bustling city. The DHA eligibility expires within 1 year years, urging timely job hunting post-exam success.

The passing score is 60%, with preparation in Restorative Dentistry, Oral Medicine/Surgery, and Periodontics essential. The MOH eligibility expires after 5 years, hence easing the job hunting post-exam success.
DOH (Department of Health – Previously HAAD): The DOH (HAAD) exam is the gateway to dental practice in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Dentists must pass a 150-MCQ exam within 3 hours, with a passing score of 65%. The DOH eligibility expires after two years, urging timely job hunting post-exam success.
EDREE (Emirates Dental Residency Entry Examination): For those eyeing postgraduate training programs, the EMREE/EDREE exam is essential. Managed by regulatory authorities (DOH, DHA, MOH), success is a ticket to specialized training programs. Dentists with a five-year dental program and internship are eligible.

Navigating post-employment considerations is pivotal for dentists aspiring to contribute to the vibrant healthcare landscape of the UAE.

Probation Periods: Understanding the Dynamics

  • The Significance of Probation Periods: Upon securing a position in a UAE-based clinic or healthcare facility, dentists often encounter a probationary period of 6 months. This initial phase serves as a mutual assessment period, allowing both the employer and the dentist to evaluate the compatibility of the working relationship. Dentists should meticulously review the terms of their probation, as they may differ across institutions.

Working Hours: Aligning with Expectations

Standard Working Hours: Dental professionals should be cognizant of the standard working hours expected by their employers. The norm is usually  48 hours a week with a weekly off.

  • Variations may exist based on the nature of the dental practice, clinic policies, and the specific role undertaken.

Overtime and Additional Commitments: Clarifying policies on overtime, additional commitments, and compensatory mechanisms ensures clarity and fairness in the employment relationship.

Leaves: Striking the Right Balance

Annual Leaves : Dental professionals are entitled to annual leaves, the duration of which varies based on the employer’s policies and the dentist’s contract. Familiarizing oneself with the leave policy is crucial to ensure a harmonious work-life balance.

Emergency Leaves and Special Circumstances: Understanding provisions for emergency leaves and special circumstances, such as medical or family emergencies, is vital. Effective communication with the employer regarding such situations fosters a supportive work environment.

Scrutinizing The Offer Document: A Blueprint for Understanding Terms

  • Dentists should thoroughly scrutinize their offer documents, paying attention to probationary terms, leave policies, and working hour expectations.
  • Any ambiguities or uncertainties should be addressed with the employer before finalizing the agreement and signing any documents.
  • You must be aware of the UAE labour laws and your rights as an employee.
  • Open Communication – Establishing open channels of communication with employers fosters transparency and minimizes misunderstandings.
